While looking at a Chinese painting of Buddhist saints, I noticed how the halo was done as a large flaming circle about the head and upper body, unlike the glowing disk on the heads of Christian saints - so like the flares and prominences of an eclipse. The figure is Tang dynasty. Although I recently became a Buddhist, this painting and the other, the Buddha Head, were done long before. I have always felt the Buddha to be a symbol of human aspirations.
