I found myself in a place I'd never been,
and wondered - who am I?

The Buddha Head
36" x 36" oils on canvas
This painting was the first completed on this theme, although I'd been working on mythical/religious images for a few years. The original impetus came from an art school friend, who was going to paint a man sitting in full lotus before a waterfall. I immediately asked, "Hey, can I use that idea?" Thanks, Helena.

The hair style is Tang dynasty, but I was also looking at the Angkor Wat figures and at Olmec heads for the face. As I drew it, I kept lowering the features, approximating, I knew, the proportions of a child's face. Why, I didn't realize until recently. Here is the face of the unborn Buddha, bathed in the waters of the womb.
